I received this email from a friend today and thought it was so eye-opening that I had to pass the illustration on to you:
A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?”
Hands started going up.
He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you, but first, let me do this.
He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it?”
Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?”
Still the hands went into the air.
“My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE and WHOSE WE ARE.”
You know, I couldn’t think of a better example of “value” than the one this man had presented to that group of people. When God had finished His creations on the sixth day, He paused and looked at what He had done and thought to Himself, ‘it was excellent in every way” (Genesis 1:31 NLT). God created you. He saw you and knew you before you were even conceived (Jeremiah 1:5) and He thinks you’re EXCELLENT. Ever stop to think about what the word ‘excellent’ means? I’ll tell you… “Of the highest or finest quality.”
Everyone knows who Leonardo da Vinci is. The famous artist? I looked up how long it took Leonardo da Vinci to paint The Last Supper. He started it in 1495 and finished it in 1498. It took him over four years to paint Mona Lisa, considered by critics to be the most famous portrait of all time. God is our Creator, an artist. He didn’t just whip you or me together in a day, brush His hands free of the dirt, and say to Himself, “There! That should do it!” He thought about you and perfected you the way He saw fit. And guess what? It doesn’t stop there. “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT).
If you have any shadow of a doubt in your mind that you are worthless or that nobody cares for you, well, just look higher. Think higher. Because there is Someone higher Who loves you, wants you, and has mind-blowing thoughts about you!
